Hello!

When i searching in google for info about ethanol fuel, 2 or 3 times i read, that if add to pure ethanol 6-8 % biodiesel (CH3-O-CH3 or C2H60, or Dimethyl ether (DME) ) or 4-6 % of Isopentane (C5H12) for good cold starting ut to -25С.

Do you know something about it? I plan to try.

Now i using ethanol (92%) in my Nissan Note, without adding gasoline, but this morning was +11C, and starting was pretty difficult - i using my own "injector impulse widener" with "cold start option", and i has to use starter 3 time for 10-15 sec. with pause 1 min for starting.

by the way, for carburators there is a hint for cold starting: press acselerator completely 3-4 times (there is some quantity of fuel will be injected into maifold) and wait 20-30 sec, then starting.

If you add something that is soluble with ethanol and ignites easier than ethanol, I'm sure it helps with your cold starts.

Dimethyl ether (or DME, or biodiesel) is soluble in ethanol

Biodiesel is less volatile than ethanol. My guess is that adding this to E85 or E100 will make cold starts worse.

How would you handle DME as it has to be stored under pressure, (5 bar) ?
As it is a diesel fuel it probably has a low octane number which could cause problems.

Isopentane looks better. Boiling point 28 C.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimethyl_ether DME could be used in petrol engines in a LPG (presureized tank) in a 70% LPG 30% DME mix so I suppose the octane number is no problem and 30% DME 70% ethanol might also work.

And electronic lambda controlled DME/LPG injectors


It could make any petrol car flexifuel: with normal gazoline in the tank no extra DME is needed, but as the amount of ethanol increases it would automatically add DME to keep the engine lambda 1

Petrol contains ca 32,76 MJ/l
98% ethanol ca 21,14 MJ/l
DME 28,4 MJ/kg

So for pure ethanol you would need ca 0,4 kg DME for every litre ethanol and totally compensate for the difference in energy and coldstart properties and have a 100 fossilfree fuel.
