Ort: Germany, Münster,
hej together,

yesterday i was called up by a friend who drives a Volvo 945 Turbo at E85. He told me that he had build that engine using some modified parts to get more power, like the camshaft.

his driving profile is, that he often drive only short and middle distances (like me) and sometimes using the highway and let the car run as fast as possible (above 220 km/h  ) (not like me)

He had demount the injection rail last weekend after running 10.000km on E85, and he found a light brown, very sticky mass at the injectors and the inlet valves.

we guess that this could be only a thermic product of the engine oil (5W40), which is a full synthetic one in our Volvo Turbo engines.

does anyone hear of anything like that?

The same as the pink stuff found in other cars? Can't remember the details, I'm afraid.

Where was the E85 bought, not in Sweden?

Try if the sticky stuff dissolves in petrol, I bet it does!

We have seen this in Sweden too, i sometimes even seem to affect performance a little while but that often just goas away again.

If it is persistant you can wash it away by just letting the car run on a litre of petrol.

ah, i see. so the phenomenon is not unknown.

driving the car with a little benzin is not possible, the car is converted like my car is.

i think he would add an engine cleaner to his E85, which could bring the same effect as driving with petrol.

does anyone know the reason for that stuff at all?

The best is to just increase the amount of petrol to say 50%.
It will be enough to clean away the "klegg" and the ECU should have possibility to re-adapt during two tanks down and two tanks up again.
(Changing petrol content from 0% to 25% to 50% and then back in reverse order)

You do not need a full tank 50/50 to wash it away, I'd say that only 10 liter 50/50 would be enough.

But most of the time it disappears of itself even without getting more petrol.

The reason for the problem is a gasoline additive, PIB or polyisobutylene. The PIB dissolves readily in gasoline but it can have a tendency to fall out in presence of large quantities of ethanol (like in E85). In Sweden, many people hade problem with this brown or pink mass during the autumn of 2006 but apparently process changes have nearly cured the problem by now.

I use to fill up with 5 or 10 litres of gasoline on empty tank, once every 10000 km, as a precaution.

okay, thanks.
i've send him a link to this thread, and i hope he have read it.

i've never looked into my engine, which runs since >25.000 km on ethanol. okay, really on pure E85 almost from July 2007, ~ 7000 km

during winter its even necessary to fill in petrol to reach E75 (in Germany they sell only E85)

You can have our E75...
We don't like it, gives only an extra problem in adapting, and gives unnessecary cancerogenics + cost.

how can you start your engine at temps < 0°C without adding petrol?
a lot of people have probs to start because the flash point of E85 is to high during winter to get the engine run

By luring the ECU that it's colder than it is by a "cold start restance".
If needed in extreme cold (below -15 C or so), up to 4 times the normal cold start enrichment can be nessecary.
By manually drive the injectors with a pushbutton or more advanced, the engine will start.
I have personally succeeded in coldstarting in -25 by enriching heavily.
SAAB has done it even with E96 with a test engine, they claim.
Higher compression ratio will also help cold starts.
For these reasons we see E96 as the natural next step in getting rid of airpolutant-cancer and dictatorship in the world.

okay, that mod is build in to my ECU, done by Stoni.
you can read his experiences at his homepage www.stonis-world.net (in English!):)

hm, my chemical and physical background told me, that the engine couldn't start, if the flashpoint of the fuel is not reached.
Into the opposite of that is your experience and statement of higher pressure and heavy enrichment. That sounds realistic. More fuele means more petrol, higher pressure and some start times means higher temps in the cylinders....but also means stress for the battery.

But before stressing the batt and nerving the neighbourhood by 4-5 starting times, it seems better to add a little petrol, just about 5% +.

More E85 helps a lot! Also you should run the starter untill the car starts but just start a few seconds thean wait ten second and try again. The petrol in E85 needs some time to evaporate and than it will start.

The best thing however is to use an electric engine preheater half an hour or so before driving away; better for the engine, battery, fuel consumption and the environment.

But that is only possible if there is 220V close to the car.

yeah, i know that a lot of cars in Sveden have a block heater, powered by 220V AC.

but to use that its ncessary to have a plug nearbay, as Aryan wrote....and thats a problem, even if you live in a bigger city, only having a public parking area.

but on the other side we do not really have hard winters at all :D
