Do you mean to say is that the French website stating max 666l is incorrect or that the german ADR rules are just different from the French?

Anyway we don't need that much, 60L is more than enough for extra range isn't it, at least my 40l was and almost german and french ADR proof :-)

but who wants nearly open fuel cans in his back without any metal between the fuel and the inner room??

Of course that is up to you to decide, but from what I read now it is not prohibited?

In my case (a hatchback) there is only a plastic trunkcover above the luggage and the jerrycans, not very different from the situation in a stationwagon exept from the (symbolic) cover.

yep, the feeling of transporting 60L flammable liquids just behind my seat is not really a nice one :?
okay, a hatchback really doesn't differ a lot  its only a little bit smaller...and maybe more unstable than a Volvo tank car :P

the regulations Ceyal talked about are called "ADR" and mean the regulations of transporting dangerous goods on streets.

i know them, too, but they differ a little in each country, caused by the option to become regulated stronger by the administration

I must say that I am a litle confused now but 60L seems ok in both Germany and France as long as you have a ABC fire extinguisher which I have (in our camper car at least) and do not smoke in te car, which I don't.

Excactly, that is why I only have 40l, 60l would not fit in with our other luggage :-)

The stock fuel tank is more exposed and likely to start to leak in case of an accident than a couple of jerrycans that you put just behind the rear seat.

no, a fire extinguisher is not necessary, if you don't touch the 60-L-border. If you want to transport more than 60L, then you must have one....regulations

and the stock tank is more exposed? hm, not in my Volvo, its nearly in the middle of the car nearby the back axle, its made of plastic, and its outside!! i guess that is the big difference between transporting fuel inside a car in jerrycans or whatever and having a big stock tank....think about my Volvo: the stock tank is 75 L, and i never felt and feel in danger.
the dangerous potencial of jerrycans inside is much higher than any kind of tank outside.....in cas of accident and leak you are just affected directly by inner transport, isnt it?

Are you sure you know about the french regulations as well? Here http://www.premiumwanadoo.com/leginauti ... burant.htm it says otherwise:

Un extincteur adapté à l'extinction des feux des classes A, B, C (extincteur à poudre), d'une capacité minimale de 2 kg doit équiper le véhicule, cet extincteur doit être facilement accessible, et le conducteur apte à l'utiliser (il doit en connaître le fonctionnement).

An ABC classed (powder) fire extinguisher with a content of at least 2kg needs to be installed easily accessable in the vehicle and the driver needs to know how to operate it.

Ort: Germany, Münster,
no, i don't know them, but i know the ADR (Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses par Route, deutsch Europäisches Übereinkommen über die internationale Beförderung gefährlicher Güter auf der Straße)

you see, its an european regulation which is valid in all countries which signed the papers.

the fire fighting measures are only required if you wanna transport MORE than 60L.

in your link the ADR itself is linked  as far as i understand French the text tells us the same as i wrote above....and you find in the ADR that the load i talked about is not restricted.

exemption see point 1.1.3.3

so there is no judicial problem...but who knows how the french police thinks about that??
